What we do

OUR JOURNEY

Prardhana began its journey in 2001 , with the main aim of identifying ‘out of school children’ in slums, providing them basic training and mainstreaming them in Government schools ( where education is free). we would gather the “out of school” children in slums, conduct informal classes for these children and join them in schools. In the first few months we had our greatest learnings. The unforgettable experiences, the difficult and challenging situations… strengthed and motivated us to take up the challenge with a stronger will and determination. Soon we realized education system was confronted with many challenges and needed a new approach. The Trust then began to involve with Government schools to build their capacities.

Work to improve the quality of life of less privileged (especially children)

Prardhana Charitable Trust has been working in slums in Hyderabad since 2001, with an aim of improving the quality of life of the less privileged, especially the slum children. The Trust put a lot of “out of school” children in Government schools and has done a remarkable job in improving the quality of education in these schools.

The trust volunteers gather the “out of school” children in slums, conduct informal classes for these children and join them in schools. They are also in touch with the children and parents to ensure all children attend school regularly.

Prardhana has been paying school /college fees for the very poor and deserving students whose parents cannot afford to educate their kids. Sometimes there are children who have studied in English Medium Private schools for a year or two, then due to hardships and in affordability, are sent to Telugu Medium Government schools where no fee is charged. These children suffer due to the change in Medium of Instruction in school, find it difficult to cope and do not fare well. Trust takes such children and puts them back in English Medium schools and pays their school fees.
The Trust also sponsors students who cannot afford further studies after class 10. Trust pays their college fees and encourages them to study further.
Prardhana has been having free fun-filled and educative summer camps for the past seventeen years for the less privileged poor children (age group 5 to 15 years). The camp is a great place for active learning and bringing out the hidden talents in children. About 150 children from different backgrounds and different schools join the camp. PCT offers them a wonderful opportunity to learn and enjoy. Activities include Art, Craft, Games, Crosswords, Puzzles, Maps, Countries, Sodokus, Computers, Music, Dance, Field Trips etc; and to top it all yummy mouthwatering snacks everyday. Our summer camp helps in attracting and mobilizing “out of school” children too.

The Trust employs Para teachers wherever there is a shortage of regular Government teachers, then begins to focus on training teachers and strengthening the teacher pupil ratio. These teachers are mostly from the same locality and are very good at bringing children back to school. Over a period of time they deal with different situations, gain teaching experience and understand the methodologies of teaching to be adopted. Some of them are easily the best in their respective schools.
The Trust gives each school teaching aids and school supplies depending on the strength of the school, their requirements, etc.
At the beginning of each academic year notebooks, stationary and uniforms are distributed to all the students from class 1 to class 5 in all the schools supported by the Trust. Toys, pencils, pens, pencil boxes, crayons, paints, drawing books, games, shoes, dresses, sweaters etc received by the Trust are also distributed in schools.

LOCOFUNSIA stands for Low Cost Fun Filled Skill Improvement Activities. This tool provides many features that Private school kids experience while learning (which the Government school children are deprived of). Locofunsia is an innovative initiative of PCT to bring an overall development in children in Government schools, using fun- filled skill development activities and games in schools, making learning fun and enjoyable. Each activity and each strategy has the potential to develop the child.

With basics in place in most schools the Trust began to improvise the learning methods. To move from mundane methods to fun filled methods, the new tool comprising fun games, art and craft, crosswords, puzzles, board games, map games, books , libraries, science experiments, music, dance and other thought provoking activities called the LOCOFUNSIA was introduced.

Another visible and transparent evaluation is a chart in each classroom, listing every student. Each child is given a credit of 300 points begining of each month. Daily /weekly marking (plus points and negative marking) is done against each student in the chart, by the class teacher. End of the month the student with the highest score is declared the best student of the month and is given a prize in appreciation. An outcome of this is increase in attendance, punctuality & a healthy competitive spirit.
Effort of a Class 4 girl child

This girl from Aanjaiah Nagar school in Bowenpally had the highest points in class and there was one more week left in that particular month. There was a family wedding and her entire family was going to their village. This little girl refused to go, begged her mom and dad, convinced them and stayed back in her neighbours house. All this to score the highest points, become the best student performer of the month and earn the prize. She ultimately succeeded!!!
